Signs of concussion

20 Dec

The term concussion describes an injury to the brain resulting from an impact to the head. Signs of concussion may not appear for days or weeks after the injury. Historically, attempts to classify the severity of concussion were based on the loss of consciousness and its duration, and the presence of amnesia. After a concussion, you may have a headache or neck pain.
Some concussion patients can have retrograde amnesia, which is a problem remembering events before the onset of the concussion. Most people with concussion do not require any treatment as they normally get better by themselves. Concussions are especially dangerous in young athletes, who are susceptible to a rare but deadly condition called Second Impact Syndrome (SIS). The primary treatments for a concussion include both physical and mental rest.
