Abdominal pain in systemic lupus

15 Jan

Although lupus affects people of all ages, it’s most often diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40. The endocarditis of systemic lupus erythematosus is characteristically noninfective (Libman-Sacks endocarditis), and involves either the mitral valve or the tricuspid valve and atherosclerosis also tends to occur more often and advances more rapidly than in the general population. Complications of organ involvement can lead to further symptoms that depend on the organ affected and severity of the disease.
Abdominal pain in lupus can be due to inflammation of the lining of the abdomen, infection of the intestines, low blood flow to the intestines caused by a clot, or inflammation of the vessels flowing to the intestines. Some people with lupus develop pleuritis, an inflammation of the lining of the chest cavity that causes chest pain, particularly with breathing.
